She showed me to the guest room down the hall from her master bedroom. I was too tired to hope for anything other than a real bed to sleep on. By the time my head hit the pillow, I was out like breasts at Mardi Gras. Because I had been on the floor for the entire week, the softness of the mattress felt like a gift for which I would have gladly paid with my remaining savings.

Around three o’clock I woke up to the feeling of someone sitting down on the bed. I almost screamed out in the darkness, forgetting where I was.

“It’s just me,” Paris whispered, patting my back. “I couldn’t sleep.”

“You okay?” I managed through a veil of sleep.

“I was just wondering if I could lie beside you for a little while.”

“Sure,” I responded, turning toward her and wrapping her in my arms. She snuggled up against me, and like that, I went right back to sleep.
